First impression
Wow, shut up and sit yourself down for a second, buddy.
I don’t know, I don’t remember that well, but the anime just made him very loud, a lot louder than the comic and I think I found him annoying, at least until some more depth was added to his character.
Impression now
Oh man, just… Reigen’s an enormous idiot and an asshole and a really good and admirable person.
For some reason even though he’s super self absorbed, cheap and dishonest, he has a very big drive to help people and make sure everything is fair. Sometimes he almost makes his help look like an accident, or he’ll act like he thinks it’s a bother, or he’ll cover it up as something he’s obligated to do because it’s his job etc., but he’s never nice on accident, Reigen just has some kind of MASSIVE hangup about admitting that he’s a nice person. Reigen doesn’t want to be nice, Reigen only wants to be smart and cool and persuasive. I don’t know what happened to make him that way, but I guess it has to do with his OTHER massive hangup about opening up to anyone. It’s incredible that someone so good at talking can be so utterly incompetent at communicating in a normal, friendly context - all because he refuses to ever be honest.
All that aside you gotta admire Reigen for being an incredibly hard worker. Even though he bullshits his way through a lot of things he puts a lot of effort into it anyway. And even though he has to deal with a lot of failure and some very harsh truths over the course of the story he picks himself up off the floor and keeps going every time. I wish for his own sake he would learn how to ask for help sometimes, but at least it seems like the people around him have come to know him well enough to see when he needs it.
Despite his rather young age and the fact that he’s a huge mess, Reigen also manages to be a really good role model. I don’t know where the hell he pulls all his genuinely wise words from, but aparently that’s just something that comes naturally to him. He’s great at fixing everyone else’s problems, but a lot less great at fixing his own. Again just.. please help him.
(Also if you’re around Reigen’s age and don’t find him at least a little relatable then I fear you.)
Favorite moment
Reigen walking straight up to punch Shimazaki in the face after everyone else struggled to even land a hit on him is the most Reigen thing Reigen has ever done. This man has plot armor like nobody’s business.
Idea for a story
I’m kind of in the “please let Reigen legally adopt Teru” camp so uh, yeah.
Also I live for Reigen and Ritsu interactions, but they typically don’t go so well, but then I guess that’s the appeal.
Unpopular opinion
The beginning of the seperation arc is honestly more upsetting to me than anything that happens in the Mogami arc and I can’t help but resent and mistrust Reigen a little bit after how he was acting in the first half of the story. I don’t know if that counts as an unpopular opinion, just some negativity.
Favorite relationship
I would default to saying Mob, because of course, but I’d rather mention Serizawa. Pretty damn lucky Mob and Reigen rescued this guy out of his misguided terrorist ways, because he’s the only adult person we’ve seen Reigen get along with for an extended period of time. Serizawa sees straight through all of Reigen’s bullshit and I think it’s pretty healthy for him to have someone around who can do that.
Favorite headcanon
I usually couldn’t care less about the sexualities of fictional characters, but Reigen comes off so incredibly ace I can’t see him any other way. I could probably write another essay on this shit, that’s how ace he looks to me.
