Edward wakes up gasping, sweat sticking his hair to his forehead. He fights for breath, each inhale terribly loud in the quiet night.

Sheets rustle beside him. A warm hand finds his, and Ling sits up, turning to face him.

“What’s wrong, qīn ài de?” he asks quietly. Ed grips his hand tightly.

“Just a nightmare,” he replies, and Ling’s other hand comes up to smooth back his hair. The moonlight filtering through the window makes him breathtakingly beautiful, eyes dark and hair like silk. It makes Ed’s heart ache.

Ling brings their joined hands up and presses his lips to Ed’s knuckles. His heart leaps. “My mother told me that you can’t get nightmares after a kiss, so don’t, alright?” He leans his cheek into their hands.

Ed’s a little choked up, but he still manages a bit of snark. “You’re so dumb, you know?” Ling throws his head back and laughs and it’s beautiful, this moment is beautiful, the nightmare fading in the moonlight and Ling’s hand in his.

“I love you,” he tells Ling, quiet but earnest. “I love you.”

Ling’s gaze is fond when he looks into Ed’s eyes. “I love you, too,” he murmurs, and when they go back to sleep, Ed doesn’t dream, not when the dream lying next to him chased the nightmares away.
