One of the funniest things about this fandom is that whenever someone tries to write Joey–even if they’re calling him Jonouchi, even if they’re trying really hard to be true to the Japanese version, even if their fic is full of carefully-researched details about Japanese culture and they’re throwing around honorifics left and right–9 times out of 10 you can still hear the Brooklyn accent leaking through his dialogue. Short of growing up with a different language’s dub or being one of the like 5 people who’s exclusively read the manga, none of us can get away from it.
